RETIRE OR KEEP WORKING?

There are people who can choose to retire fully or partially, and keep on working as they’ve always done, with more or less changes.

These are legitimate options that many take advantage of in order to broaden their work experience by introducing more flexibility and freedom into their jobs, expanding their scope of activity or developing new interests. These initiatives let them enjoy a richer and more innovative life.

Others keep doing exactly what they have been doing before retiring. It may be because of difficulty acknowledging different needs or desires, or because of a need to maintain an identity threatened by retirement, or to deny the passage of time. This type of response lessens the possibility of fostering new thinking or constructive change.

Both types are in danger of giving up on ever enjoying retirement, a different stage of life with its unique challenges and opportunities.

To retire or to continue working? It’s important to bear in mind that retirement makes it possible to readjust available resources and harness others that previously remained hidden or dormant. In order to open up these opportunities, which make it possible to better know oneself and become fulfilled, it’s advisable to retire before advanced ageing brings along with it the inevitable impairment.
